5 British Sports Personalities To Keep an Eye on in UK Sports 2022
British Athletes To Watch For
Here are five British athletes at the start of their careers that we think you should pay extra attention to. The people on this list have already stunned the crowds in various sports events this year, and we are certain they’ll keep astonishing us with their achievements in the future. If you enjoy watching sports in the UK, you might have heard of some of these British talents:
Emma Raducanu – Tennis
Raducanu was raised in London after being born in Toronto. In June 2021, the tennis player made her WTA Tour debut. Outside the top 300 and given a wildcard entry to Wimbledon, she advanced to the fourth round of her maiden major competition.
Two months later, at the US Open, Raducanu defeated Leylah Fernandez in the championship match without dropping a set, becoming the first singles qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era. She held the Open Era record for the fewest majors played before winning a title; it was the second Grand Slam event of her career. Emma Raducanu defeated Alison van Uytvanck in straight sets establishing a strong start at her maiden Wimbledon as a Grand Slam champion.
Zoe Atkin – Freestyle Ski
Zoe Atkin is a 19-year-old British freestyle skier. Atkin placed eighth in the halfpipe at the Junior World Championships in New Zealand in August 2018 after a streak of top-five Nor-Am Cup finishes in slopestyle and halfpipe in 2017–18. She then made her World Cup debut in December 2018 and finished 14th.
That marked the beginning of Zoe’s breakthrough season, during which time she won three more Nor-Am competitions, placed 13th at the World Championships, and took fifth place at just her second World Cup. Zoe Atkin is beginning to establish a reputation for herself independent of her older sister Izzy, who won medals at the Olympic and World Championships. Recently, she entered the halfpipe event at the 2021 Ski and Snowboarding World Championships where she won a bronze medal. Zoe Atkins is striving to make a mark during the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games, so definitely keep an eye out for her.
Daryll Neita – Sprinting
In the 4 100-meter relays, the 25-year-old Daryll Neita won bronze medals at the Olympics in 2016 and 2021 and silver medals at the World Championships in 2017 and 2019. Her 100-meter personal best time of 10.93 seconds (2021) places her behind Dina Asher-Smith on the UK all-time list.
Just 20 days before the World Championships, Asher-Smith was dealt a setback by Daryll Neita, who shocked her long-time rival by defeating her by 100 metres on the same stage.
Since their early adolescence, the two have scaled the ranks together as competitors, with Asher-Smith consistently coming out on top. All eyes are currently on Darryl Neita, who is confident in her future potential – and so are we.
Conor Gallagher – Football
Connor Gallager, 22, is a professional football player that started his career playing for Chelsea. Throughout the years he has spent loan spells at Swansea City, Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace, and West Bromwich Albion.
He recorded the most goals and assists of any player under the age of 21 in the Premier League by the beginning of December last year, with six for Crystal Palace. Gallagher has established himself as a cult figure among Palace supporters in addition to breaking into the England team. Everyone is wondering, what does the future hold for this UK sports talent.
Keely Hodgkinson – Sprinting
Keely Hodgkinson began her indoor season on 19th February 2022 when she won the 800m at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix, breaking the British record, the all-comers’ record, the 20-year record for the fastest time anywhere, the record for the fastest time ever by a teenager, and the sixth-fastest time ever. Since the world record was established on the exact day of her birth, no woman had ever run faster indoors.
Olympic medallist Keely Hodgkinson has been named in the first set of selections for Great Britain and Northern Ireland team to take part in the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Oregon, and has been an aspiring athlete for years, becoming the 800 meter European U20 champion when she was 16.
