Corach Rambler Looking to Join History Books at Aintree

Scottish-based horse Corach Rambler was the latest horse to win the Grand National last April when he prevailed in the world’s most famous steeplechase by just under two lengths for trainer Lucinda Russell.

The 10-year-old is set to return to Aintree in April where he will be bidding to become just the third horse in the last 50 years to win the race in back-to-back years. Red Rum managed that achievement in 1974, while more recently, Tiger Roll defended his crown in 2019.

Final Appearance Before Aintree to Come at Cheltenham Festival

Russell has revealed that Corach Rambler will have two more runs this season. He is set to appear at the Cheltenham Festival in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The staying chaser will then feature at Aintree a month later.

The five-time chaser has been victorious at the last two Cheltenham Festival meetings, with wins coming in the 2022 and 2023 Ultima Handicap Chase. This time around he is taking on the biggest race of the week, and he can be backed at +2500 in the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting. Those looking to bet on the Grand National winning should consider a Cheltenham new customer offer this year, like the bet £10, get £30 available with bet365.

Corach Rambler is set to take on the front two from last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, Galopin Des Champs and Bravemansgame respectively, while Shishkin, Gerri Colombe, and Fastorslow are all thought to be strong contenders for the Blue Riband contest in the sport this year.

More Weight on His Back This year

The handicapper is set to reveal the weights for the 2024 Grand National in February, and it is expected that Corach Rambler will have a much higher weight allocation this year. He carried 10st 5lb to victory in 2023.

One of the reasons only two horses have been able to defend their crown in the Grand National since 1974 is due to the weight increase the winner has to contend with. Corach Rambler will need an even better performance this year if he is to cross the finish line in front again in Merseyside.

His trainer Lucinda Russell is vying for her third Grand National triumph as she also won the race in 2017 with One For Arthur. Should she saddle the winner this year with Corach Rambler, it will rank as the best of her three wins.

Two Runs Already this Season

Russell’s leading chaser has already featured twice so far this season without success. He came home in fifth place on his seasonal reappearance at Kelso back in October, while last time out at Haydock, he was third of four runners in a Grade One contest at Haydock.

Those two runs will have sharpened the horse up ahead of his two big assignments in March and April. His career results show he is often at the top of his game in the second half of the season, particularly over distances beyond 3m.

The 2024 Grand National is set to take place on the 13th of April and it will be the 176th renewal in history.
