Looking Ahead to the World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place across three nations — The USA, Canada and Mexico — is only a matter of months away, and already people are talking about which teams they expect to be contenders. As the greatest sporting event in the world, all eyes will be on the tournament, which has been expanded to 48 teams, as nations go head to head to become world champions.

Spain

According to World Cup betting odds, Spain are the team to beat at next year’s tournament. While the World Cup 2010 winners haven’t really impressed since they lifted the trophy in South Africa, they did win the Euros in 2024, with the suggestion being that a new era has dawned in Spain. Not only do the Spanish have experience running through their side in the form of players like David Raya, Rodri, and Mikel Merino. They can also call on young talents like Dean Huijsen and Yamine Lamal, who are already impressing on the biggest stages.

France

You could say that France have a point to prove at the upcoming World Cup. They made it to the final in Qatar in 2022, losing on penalties to Argentina. That defeat, especially in that manner, hurt the French, and they will be out for revenge. Dider Deschamps’ side making the final was no fluke; they have quality in all areas of their team, and now, slightly older and wiser, they could be an even bigger threat in the summer. And of course, any team that can call on world-class players such as Michael Olise and Kylian Mbappe is going to have a chance against anyone.

England

England are one of those teams that are always tipped for success, but they never quite manage to get the job done. Under former manager Gareth Southgate, the Three Lions came on leaps and bounds, and were on the verge of winning something. However, after failing to get over the line, England have turned to Thomas Tuchel to help them finally end decades of hurt. They’ve looked good in qualifying, with Tuchel already beginning to shape his group ahead of the tournament. But it remains to be seen if Tuchel can find that extra couple of per cent required.

Brazil

Brazil, like England, are a team that is always seen as a threat pre-tournament, but they’ve failed to live up to the hype in recent times. Also like the Three Lions, Brazil have made a managerial change, with serial winner Carlo Ancelotti arriving after leaving Real Madrid. There is no doubt that the squad boasts quality, with the likes of Gabriel, Bruno Guimaraes, Rodrygo, and Vinicius Junior all featuring, but the challenge is to get it all to work together. If there’s a man who can bring the good times back to Brazil, it’s Ancelotti, especially as he’s worked with many of the squad’s players previously.

Final Thoughts

As every World Cup approaches, the general consensus is that the upcoming tournament will be the best yet. And, in the case of the 2026 World Cup, it really could be the case. You have some nations that will head to the competition with a serious point to prove, while others will have a group of players that are at the peak of their powers. It all bodes well for what will be a huge event next summer.
