ARMADILLOS BASEBALL CLUB – SANTA MARTA, COLOMBIA

Our story

I love baseball. It’s a way of life. It teaches you discipline, commitment and friendship. It creates communities. Those values are absent from most deprived neighborhoods in Santa Marta. I wanted to change that when I created Armadillos social and sports foundation. I wanted to give the kids from my neighborhood a chance to devote themselves to a sport. I wanted to offer them another way of life to keep them on the right track. I wanted to build a community.

Twenty kids joined the team from the beginning. We had to improvise a ball field in one of their mother’s backyard. Every day, after practice, both the children and the staff have to clean it and sustain it. It has been five years and the team has grown. Today, we have more than sixty children of all ages.

In 2016, we were invited to a tournament in Mexico. Exceptionnaly, the Colombian League supported us with the plane tickets and the travelling expences. It was a dream come true for the kids. It was the first time many of them got in a plane. They trained as hard as they could, and they left their hearts in the field. But, when we came back to Santa Marta, reality caught up with us. We don’t have enough equipment for all the players, we have to share bats and gloves. Very often, we have to play with makeshift balls.

We are still invited to competitions in Colombia and abroad, but we don’t have the money to assist. Each invitation we decline is a new dissapointment for the children and their families.

We never want to let them down again. We want to keep on growing, and give our armadillos the chance to grow both as athletes and human beings.

Nuestra historia

Me encanta el béisbol. Es una filosofía de vida. Enseña disciplina, compromiso y camaradería. Crea una comunidad. Esos son los valores que más hacen falta en muchos de los barrios deprimidos de Santa Marta. Eso quise cambiar cuando creé la fundación deportiva y social Armadillos. No sólo quería brindarle a los niños del barrio Aeromar otras oportunidades de entrenar un deporte, sino también otras perspectivas de vida, una actividad que los mantuviera por el buen camino y que construyera una comunidad.

Veinte niños se unieron a esta iniciativa desde su inicio. Tuvimos que improvisar una cancha en la casa de una de las madres del barrio. Todos los días, después de los entrenamientos, tanto los niños como los profesores tenemos que limpiarlo y mantenerlo. Llevamos ya cinco años y cada vez hay más niños inscritos. Hoy son más de sesenta de todas edades.

En el 2016, pudimos participar en un torneo en México. La Liga de Colombia nos apoyó excepcionalmente con los recursos para ir. Fue un sueño hecho realidad para los niños. Muchos de ellos no habían montado en avión. Se entrenaron como nunca y dejaron su corazón en la cancha. Pero al volver a Santa Marta, nos encontramos de nuevo con la realidad. No tenemos los equipos suficientes para todos los jugadores, tenemos que compartir bates y guantes. Muchas veces tenemos que improvisar bolas.

Nos siguen invitando a torneos tanto en Colombia como en otros países, pero no contamos con los recursos para asistir. Cada invitación que tenemos que declinar es una nueva decepción para nuestros niños y sus familias.

No queremos volver a decepcionarlos. Queremos seguir creciendo y darle la oportunidad a nuestros armadillos de crecer como deportistas y como seres humanos.
