I have been given the opportunity to enter the Renault UK Clio Grid for 2018 with Matrix Motorsport. I am extremely proud to be given this opportunity. My eventual ambition is to progress through the Renault UK Clio Cup and compete in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). I am currently seeking funding to compete in the Donington Park meeting on 28th-29th April.
I have been go-karting since I was six years old in various karts and at various venues. At my local go-karting venue I have consistently finished no lower than third position, producing equal lap times every lap and I was therefore invited to compete for a NKA karting championship. My recent racing history includes testing in an MG ZR and competing in a Renault Clio scholarship where there were two timed sessions and my quickest lap time improved by 2.5 seconds from the first session to the second. I have also competed in successful MINI Cooper Challenges at Oulton Park and Donington Park. Most recently I competed in a karting race at my local venue where I claimed pole position and won with lapping everyone in the process. I am eager to take the next step in my racing career and compete in a professional championship.
The Renault UK Clio Cup heads into 2018 aiming to build further on the rise in popularity that it has enjoyed in the past three seasons.
All 18 of the UK Clio Cup’s races will take place at the British Touring Car Championship’s high-profile events which in 2017 attracted a total of 385,100 people and a record 144.5 hours of live free-to-air coverage on ITV4.
Races were also streamed live on the ITV.com website – thereby adding to the potential audience reach via handheld devices.
2017’s UK Clio Cup was the fastest in history, as witnessed by an astonishing 14 new qualifying and race lap records. A return to Michelin tyres certainly played a hand as did one of the most competitive grids in memory.
To cap it all, new Champion Mike Bushell has been confirmed as a BTCC driver for 2018 and, just two years after winning the UK Clio Cup crown in 2015, Ashley Sutton will go into 2018 as the reigning British Touring Car Champion…
In fact most of the BTCC grid comprises drivers with UK Clio Cup/Renault Sport backgrounds – think Mat Jackson, Colin Turkington, Andrew Jordan, Jason Plato, Jack Goff, Senna Proctor and Ant Whorton-Eales for starters.
Meanwhile, overseas, UK Clio Cup champions Jonny Adam and Josh Files in 2017 won the Le Mans 24 Hours GTE class and German TCR touring car crown respectively. 2002 racer Robert Huff made it a record nine touring car wins at the Macau GP.
Each car on the UK Clio Cup grid – a race-spec version of the potent Clio Renault Sport 220 Trophy – is identical and prepared by highly professional teams, some with very obvious links to the BTCC. In addition the trademark bumper-to-bumper racing on track makes the UK Clio Cup the most exciting supporting category alongside the BTCC.
The £25,000 target fund is per meeting in the Renault UK Clio Cup and covers the cost of the following items:
- Renault UK Clio Cup car
- Team fees
- Driver entry fees
- Tyres
- Insurance
- Spare parts
